Week 1

Why I love to Work Out:

Some people have asked why I have decided to begin this journey. There are a lot of reasons why. Ever since I was a little girl I have felt the drive to be the best in athletics. One of my first memories was in 1st grade. I grew up in a military family and at the time we were stationed in Vicenza Italy. On this particular day of school we had our class race, I don't even remember the distance we were to run, I just remembered walking to the track and wanting to win. Being the princess I was; I wore my prettiest running shoes: my black patent church shoes. I don't think I remembered to wear my tennis shoes :) Anyway, we started the race and all I could think about was not to let any of the boys beat me, so I kept my head down and focused as hard as I could to the finish line. When the race was over I learned that I had taken 1st!! This was huge for me, it was one of my first moments where I felt invincible!

There are lot of things that encourage us all to be active in sports. As a teenager I read Shape, Self and Fitness magazine faithfully! I remember a particualar Nike ad of an older woman probably 75 years old in black and white weight lifting. I don't remember the slogan of the ad, I just remember thinking, "I want to be that fit when I'm that age." Nike had some great ads, here just a few that impacted me:

"You were born a daughter.
You looked up to your mother.
You looked up to your father.
You looked up to everyone.
You wanted to be a princess.
You thought you were a princess."

"....if you let me me play, I will suffer less depression. If you let me play, I will be 60% less likely to get breast cancer. If you let me play, I will be more likely to leave a man who beats me. If you let me play, I will be less likely to get pregnant before I want to. I will learn what it means to be strong. If you let me play sports."

Inspiration, Confidence & Reassurance
Yeah sure Nike definately played on my emotions - but it worked - So, back to inspiration, people who have inspired me to be fit. Well, my mother & father for one. They were great parents who taught me to tryout for every sport even if I wasn't going to make it. My FABULOUS P.E. teacher - Sandi Jet - where would I be out with her??? She spent countless hours with me practicing back handsprings so that I could tryout for Aggie Cheerleading my Freshman year at USU!!! What a great lesson that was for me! I tried out and didn't even make the first cut - but it was such a great experience and my Mom stood by me!!

Right now I have 4 kids, my oldest daughters are playing basketball for the first time this winter- I'm soo proud of them!! They may not be the most coordinated right now, but with inspiration and reassurance from her dad and I that's the confidence they need!

Week 1 Photos

This is me at week one! I bought this swimsuit last summer and was much heavier - what the crap was I thinking? Did I acutally think I looked good in this? Thank goodness I didn't make it to the local pool with my kids in it :)
